The musky scent of old books filled the secluded cabin, where the ailing sage lay in his bed. Outside, the wind howled through the pinyons, its reedy whistle echoing in the night.

Suddenly, an apparition appeared at the door, its flaccid form shifting like mist. It raised a hand, beckoning him forward. The old man tried to resist, but an unseen force was engulfing him. His breath came out condensed into cold mist as fear took hold.

He squirmed, feeling pressure on his chest—like sharp talons pressing into his bosom. He gasped, his throat thick with mucous. Then, darkness.
